WooCommerce will officially allow users to test paid extensions through sandbox websites before purchasing

WooCommerce.com is restoring a feature that allows customers to test extensions in a sandbox environment before purchasing for up to 30 days, before automatically destroying the sandbox website.

Although WooCommerce.com already offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if a user is not satisfied with a purchase, the sandbox test provides front-line prevention for customers who must invoke a money-back guarantee. It allows customers to test extensions based on their unique list of needs without committing to purchase, saving time and resources for both parties.

The process for this feature is strategic because it requires prospects to log in or create accounts to test extensions. This allows users to return and revisit their test site later during the decision-making process. WooCommerce.com can also collect data on how many sandboxes are activated for each extension for it and determine which sandboxes are struggling to convert. It wouldn’t be surprising if WooCommerce finally simplified these sandboxes for better conversions.

In testing this feature, I chose the WooCommerce Pre-Orders extension. After logging in, the site loaded within seconds and the extension was activated in the empty store. I successfully created a pre-order product.

Real-time testing is not yet available for all extensions. WooCommerce engineer Rémi Corson reports that it is currently active on the following products (with more in the future):

Follow-up emails, product add-ons, product CSV import kit, product suppliers, table rate transportation, bookings, checkout field editors, points and rewards, and pre-orders (follow-up emails, product add-ons, product CSV import suite, product vendors, table rate shipping, bookings, checkout field editor, points and rewards, and pre-orders).

Any available extensions can be activated simultaneously on existing test sites.

The sandbox site at WooCommerce.com is strictly set up to test extensions in a simple way. If you need to eliminate conflicts with other extensions during testing, this may not be the best. The test site does not allow you to install different themes or add any other plug-ins.

In most cases, real-time testing capabilities should be sufficient to answer most of the questions users ask before purchasing an extension. It is also very suitable for showing to customers where it is necessary to justify the cost. Some of these extensions cost between $100 and $249 per year, which is not a small sum for people who are just starting out with a store and want to know if the extensions will suit their needs.

WooCommerce.com is one of many digital product creators in the WordPress world who have adopted such testing, although the lifespan of sandboxes can range from an hour to a few weeks. If you don’t want to provide a free version of the extension that users need to pay for upgrades, providing instant, real-time testing is definitely your best choice. It saves users the trouble of having to set up their own test site and get refunds, and it also allows them to actually browse a large number of commercial add-ons that they may not have thought about exploring.
